Gobo Projectors for Retail Stores: A Buying Checklist

Retail Gobo Projector Buying Checklist | GoboUltra

A retail gobo projector uses a patterned glass or metal insert to project a logo onto a surface. For a store, the right choice depends on the installation location, surrounding light, desired image size and artwork—not wattage alone. Start with a site brief before choosing a projector or ordering a replacement gobo.

Do you need a projector or just a custom gobo?

A custom gobo is the image-bearing insert; it does not project a logo by itself. If your shop has no compatible fixture, you need a projector and a matching gobo. If you already own a projector, identify its exact model before ordering a new insert. Two fixtures can use different gobo dimensions even when their power ratings are similar.

For replacement artwork, start with our custom glass gobo options and gobo size guide. Confirm the fixture's required outer diameter, image diameter and thickness before production.

Choose the projection location first

Retail location What to check What to include in your brief
Indoor entrance or aisle Ceiling lights, customer sight lines and possible obstructions Mounting position, floor or wall photo, and operating hours
Window display Daylight, reflections and the surface receiving the image Photos from inside and outside at the intended operating time
Exterior wall or entrance Weather exposure, nearby lighting and mounting access Location photos and whether the fixture and connections are exposed

Do not assume a clear shop window will display a projected logo like a solid wall. Tell the supplier whether the image should appear on glass, a display panel, a floor or a wall. If projection through a window is planned, ask for an assessment of the complete setup.

Measure both distance and image size

Projection distance is the distance from the projector lens to the receiving surface. Image size is the width or diameter of the projected artwork. They are separate measurements: asking for a logo at a certain distance does not specify how large that logo should be.

Provide both measurements, plus the intended mounting angle. Ask whether the proposed fixture and lens can produce the requested image at that location. A recommended distance in a product title describes the suggested use range; it should not be treated as a promise of identical visibility under every lighting condition.

Assess lighting during actual opening hours

A display that looks clear after closing may look different with the shop lights on. Evaluate the location at the times when customers will see it, including daylight hours if relevant. Include nearby illuminated signs and display lighting in your photos rather than switching them off for the assessment.

Avoid selecting a model from wattage alone or relying on a photograph taken in unknown conditions. Ask for a recommendation that considers the surface, surrounding light, image size and distance together. If daylight visibility is essential, state that requirement before ordering; do not assume an evening example proves daytime performance.

Prepare artwork for a readable retail logo

Choose what visitors need to recognize: the brand name, a symbol or a short message. Review fine text and intricate details at the intended viewing distance. A full-color version may suit some artwork, while a simpler single-color design may communicate the essential message more clearly.

Supply the best available original artwork and request a proof showing the intended orientation and content. Confirm spelling, colors and the image boundary before approving production. A digital proof confirms the artwork; it is not a measurement of brightness at your store.

Confirm outdoor suitability and installation details

For an exterior installation, check the specific fixture's environmental rating and installation instructions. Also confirm the suitability of the mounting hardware, power supply and electrical connections for the location. A fixture rating alone does not describe the protection of an entire installation.

Ask the installer to assess mounting access, cable routing and the beam direction. Keep the projection focused on the intended display area. If the planned image extends beyond your premises, confirm permission for that location before installation.

Send this checklist before requesting a recommendation

  • Store type and whether the projector is indoors or outdoors.
  • A photo of the mounting location and receiving surface during operating hours.
  • Lens-to-surface distance and desired logo width or diameter.
  • Operating hours and whether daylight visibility is required.
  • Original artwork and whether the image should be static or rotating.
  • For an existing fixture: brand, exact model and confirmed gobo dimensions.
  • Delivery destination and the date by which installation is needed.

For example, “a logo on an indoor entrance floor, with ceiling lights on, projected from the proposed ceiling mount” is a more useful starting point than “a powerful projector.” Add the measured distance and required image size so the recommendation can be checked against your space.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use one gobo in every projector?

No. Compatibility depends on the fixture's required dimensions and supported gobo type. Confirm the exact model and dimensions rather than relying on a size letter alone.

Does a higher wattage guarantee a better result?

No. The suitability of the complete setup also depends on the optics, surrounding light, receiving surface, image size and installation distance. Request a recommendation for the actual location.

Can logo projection guarantee more sales?

No. Projection is a display tool, not a sales guarantee. If you test it, compare similar trading periods and record other changes such as promotions and opening hours before drawing conclusions.

What should I send GoboUltra before buying?

Send the site photos, distance, desired image size, operating conditions and artwork listed above. Use our support email to discuss the setup, or review the custom glass gobo page if you already have a compatible fixture.
